MARICOPA — After multiple days of the Maricopa City Council race looking like it had settled into a particular order, a Friday evening update threw everything back into the air.
With Nancy Smith and Bob Marsh still comfortably in position to win two of the three open city council seats, there will likely need to be a runoff election on Nov. 3 for the third and final seat.
Amber Liermann has solidified her hold on the third place spot with 3,216 votes. But the battle for who would face her in November should Liermann go through is as intense as can be.
Incumbent Julia Gusse, who just earlier on Friday had expanded her lead on Andre LaFond to 40 votes, now only leads by five, 3,137-3,132. That represents only a 0.02% difference in the vote.
