Maricopa upset by higher school tax due to state law change

MARICOPA — With an imminent increase of the secondary property tax for Maricopa residents, many in the city are pointing fingers at the state Legislature.

On Wednesday, the city sent out a press release informing residents that their secondary property tax would increase. The city says that's because the Legislature passed, and the governor signed, Senate Bill 1529, which “significantly” changed school funding in selected districts across the state.

“This bill shifted the responsibility from the state to certain local school districts, including the Maricopa Unified School District,” the statement reads.
